Idols explained!

Firstly, what exactly is an idol? Idols are considered a separate category of Japanese artists, with groups ranging from AKB48, to Aqours, to Momoiro Clover Z and many more.However, idols exist overseas as well, and are considered 'Kaigai ldols'. Kaigai -> 海外, means 'Overseas' or 'Foreign', but what exactly makes someone a kaigai idol?People who have a strong admiration and inspiration of Japanese style pop, rock etc are considered Kaigai Idols. In South Korea, these groups are typically referred to as "jihadols", however, the fact that they are heavily inspired by J-Pop groups can make them Kaigai idols; with some even covering Japanese music or releasing Japanese music.The Kaigai community is built up by Wota's, or Japanese idol fans. Wota's are particularly associated with fans of Hello! Project and AKB48.The overseas idol community has existed for nearly two to three decades already! There are Kaigai idols all over the world, ranging from South Korea to Canada to America to Europe!
Some examples are -> YUB!KiRi, Non Sweet, PAiDA, BERRY etc..A large number of Kaigai idols work completely independently, with no label or major company to back them up. This means that a lot of them write/produce/compose their own music. In the idol community, you have those who sing and perform their own songs, or those who lip sync and perform songs by already existing groups! We even have these in Belgium, however most of these groups are fairly cosplay focused, or focusing on Idol focused anime/ games such as; Love Live!, Project Sekai, Vocaloid, and more.

BERRY

Call & Responses

One major part of being an idol, in our eyes at least, are ‘call and responses’. Other than call and responses being used in other types of music and not just J-pop, it is a way for the performer to have more interaction with their audience! For J-pop idols this is usually either a question or sentence where their audience follows up with a response!As an example we can take those of both Tokui Sora voice actress of Nico Yazawa whose call and response is so easy as she says the same thing twice, only the second time she does it with her audience! She says
“Sore dewa minna-san go issho ni, Nico Nico Nii!” and the second time, both her and the audience say “Nico Nico Nii!”
which is a sentence her character in Love Live uses a lot!Or that of Anju Inami, voice actress of Chika Takami, whose call and response goes like this:Anju : “Kan Kan!”
Audience : “Mikan”
Anju : “Kan Kan!”
Audience : “Mikan”
Anju & Audience : “Kan Kan Mi-Ka-N!”A call and response can involve a question to the audience, or simply be a repeat of what the idols say!It’s more or less a way of the idol being able to interact more with their audience, and the responses and participation in our call and responses are always highly appreciated! Have any major pieces of media acknowledged international/overseas idols?

There have been some instances over the years! The Love Live! franchise has definitely shown foreign idols, with members of Nijigasaki High School Idol Club and Liella! being from countries such as China, Hong Kong, Austria and the US. Love Live! also recently aired an OVA for Nijigasaki titled NEXT SKY, which focuses on the club showing Isla what it is like to be a school idol, before she returns to England and eventually starts her own school idol club with Penelope. In the anime series, Ayumu Uehara is also seen traveling to London to see some overseas idols perform live, too.

Do Kaigai Idols release merchandise like CDs and lightsticks?

Some in fact do, yes! In J-Pop however, we call lightsticks “penlights” or “fanlights”!
Sakura Sailors are selling buttons, photo prints and art prints, charms, chekis and personalized chekis (with someone included on the picture)!
A ‘Cheki’ -> チェキ is the japanese word for a small instant camera, or better known as a polaroid! So you’re getting a personalized polaroid photo together with one or all of our members!

Are there any events that Kaigai Idols often perform at?

In Belgium Kaigai Idols can often be seen performing at anime conventions such as FACTS, Made In Asia, JapanCon, ... Many also perform at Atsusacon and the Japanese garden in Hasselt during the manga & cosplay festival! These are however mostly the type that do full cosplay performances! There are quite a few groups out there that actively perform, and we highly recommend you checking them out as well!

Who are Sakura Sailors?

Well that’s us! Sakura Sailors started out as a cosplay focused dance group, with the main focus being Liella! and Aqours from the Love Live! anime franchise. Besides just being a dance group, we are all very close friends! The group originated with 5 original members, Snow, Charlie, Rin, Kiki and our now graduated member Yoppi! In may 2023 both Vee and Chusy joined as submembers, both becoming main members as of the beginning of 2024 and now consists of 6 active members.Sakura Sailors try to practice together every Sunday, but our members practice on their own during the week as well, as much as their personal life allows them to! Everyone has their own few tasks within the group, but we always stand ready to help one another out if needed!The decision to begin performing on different songs as our own characters was made official as of ‘year 2’, where Sakura Sailors uploaded their second anniversary cover of ‘' Utsukushiku lkiro' by Takane No Nadeshiko. In the second year of Sakura Sailors, we hope to perform as our own idol characters as much as we can, and have a broader setlist in terms of songs!Like seen in some other J-pop franchises or groups, they have subunits within their group. So does Sakura Sailors, we have ‘Lunar Blossoms’ which consist of Snow, Charlie and Kiki as well as ‘KiraKira☆Magic’ which consists of Vee, Chusy and Rin.We try to incorporate other J-pop groups, K-pop and even try our hand at C-pop dances!
Thanks to the hosts of the ‘Amazing Asia Festival’ we get to debut this new idea to a broader audience! We hope you stay to watch and enjoy our performances, we all will do our very best to give you a performance to remember!

Ten eerste, wat is een Idol exact? Idols zijn een aparte categorie van Japanse artiesten, met diverse groepen die gaan van AKB48, naar Aqours, tot Momoiro Clover Z en nog veel meer.Maar ook buiten Japan bestaan Idols, daar wordt men beschouwd als ‘Kaigai Idol. Kaigai -> 海外, letterlijk vertaald betekend ‘Buitelands’ of ‘Uitheems’, maar wat maakt iemand een Kaigai idol?Mensen met een sterke adoratie of liefde en wie zich geïnspireerd voelen door Japanse stijl pop, rock en andere typen muziek worden aanschouwt als Kaigai Idols. In Zuid Korea worden deze soort groepen eigenlijk ‘Jihadols’ genoemd, maar het feit dat ze nog steeds hun inspiratie halen bij J-pop groepen kan hen nog steeds Kaigai idols maken; sommige groepen coveren dan ook Japanse muziek of brengen hun eigen Japanse muziek uit.De Kaigai gemeenschap is opgebouwd door Wota’s ofwel Japanse idol fans. Wota’s worden vaak geassocieerd met fans van Hello! Project en AKB48.De buitenlands idol gemeenschap bestaat al bijna zo’n twee to drie decennium! Er zijn Kaigai idolen te vinden al over de wereld, van Zuid Korea, tot Canada, tot Amerixa en Europa!
Een paar voorbelden hiervan zijn -> YUB!KiRi, Non Sweet, PAiDA, BERRY etc..Een groot aantal van Kaigai Idols werken zelfstandig, zonder label or grote company die hen helpt. Dit betekent dat heel veel van hen zelf hun liedjes schrijven/produceren/composeren. In de idol community heb je groepen die echt zingen en met hun eigen nummers optreden. Maar je hebt ook de groepen die lip syncen en optreden op bestaande liedjes van andere groepen. We hebben deze zeker ook hier en België, hoewel hebben deze groepen vooral een cosplay focus, of gefocust op idol spelletjes of animes zoals; Love Live!, Project Sekai, Ensemble Stars, Vocaloid, en nog veel meer!

BERRY

Call and responses

Een groot deel van het idol zijn, of toch voor ons, zijn de ‘call and responses’. Call and responded worden gebruikt in verschillende soorten muziek, niet enkel J-pop, het is een manier voor de artiest om met zijn of haar publiek een interactie te hebben! Voor j-pop idols is dit vaak een vraag of leuk zinnetje waar het publiek op opvolgt met een antwoord!Een voorbeeld hiervan kan je nemen aan stem active Tokui Sora, wie de stem inspreekt voor Nico Yazawa wiens call and response extreem gemakkelijk is aangezien ze steeds hetzelfde zegt, alleen de tweede keer doet ze het samen met het publiek. Haar call and response gaat als volgende “Sore dewa minna-san go issho ni, Nico Nico Nii!” En de tweede keer zeggen zij en het publiek tesamen “Nico Nico Nii!” Een leuke hint naar wat haar karakter vaak zegt in de anime.Of die van stem actrice Anju Inami! Stem van Chika Takami, wiens call and response als volgend gaat:Anju: “Kan Kan!”
Publiek: “Mikan!”
Anju: “Kan Kan!”
Publiek: “Mikan!”
Tesamen: “Kan Kan, Mi-Ka-N!”Een call and response kan een vraag zijn naar het publiek, of gewoon een herhaling van wat de idol zegt.Het is een manier van communiceren met het publiek voor een idol, en dat jullie meedoen aan onze call and responses zullen wij allemaal heel erg waarderen! Je kan deze vinden in de kleine flyertjes met informatie over ons!

Heeft een of andere grote type media internationale of buitelands idols al eens erkend?

Er zijn zeker een paar instanties geweest over de jaren! De Love Live! Franchise is zeker bekend om zijn internationale idols, met leden van Nijigasani High School Idol club en Liella! Die afkomstig zijn van andere landen zoals China, Oostenrijk en Amerika! Love Live! Heeft recentelijk ook nog een OVA aflevering voor Nijigasani uitgebracht genaamd ‘NEXT SKY’, deze focust op de club die Isla laten zien hoe het is om een school idol te zijn voor zij terugkeert naar Engeland. Isla stelt hier uiteindelijk haar eigen School Idol club op samen met Penelope. In de anime serie zelf reist Ayumu Uehara zelf vaak naar Londen om daar buitenlands idols te zien optreden.

Maken Kaigai Idols merchandise zoals CD’s of lightsticks?

Sommigen doen dit zeker! In J-pop noemen we Lighsticks, penlight ofwel fanlights!Sakura Sailors verkoopt ook merch zoals buttons, foto prints, tekening prints, sleutelhangertjes, cheki’s and gepersonaliseerde cheki’s!
‘Cheki’ -> チェキ is het Japanse woord voor kleine instant camera, ook beter gekend als een polaroid! Dus je kunt een gepersonaliseerde polaroid foto krijgen met één of meerdere van onze leden!

Zijn er enige andere eventen waar kaigai idols nog bij optreden?

In België kan je kaigai idols vaak zien optreden op anime conventies zoals; FACTS, Made In Asia, JapanCon, … Het grootste evenement waar je veel idols gaat tegenkomen zijn vooral Het Manga en Cosplay event in de Japanse tuinen in Hasselt, en op Atsusa con! Dit zijn dan wel het type idol die een specifieke groep cosplayen en op hun muziek optreden. Er zijn zeker een paar actieve groepen, waarvan we jullie zeker aanraden om hen eens op te zoeken!

Wie zijn Sakura Sailors?

Dat zijn wij! Sakura Sailors startte als een cosplay gefocuste dans groep, waarin de focus vooral bij de groepen Liella! En Aqours lag van de Love Live! Anime franchise. Buiten enkel een dansgroepje, zijn wij natuurlijk allemaal een hechte vriendengroep geworden! De groep startte uit met de originele 5 leden ; Snow, Charlie, Rin, Kiki en ons geliefde ex lid Yoppi! In Mei 2023 kwamen beiden Vee en Chusy erbij als sub members, en in het begin van 2024 werden zij main members, de groep bestaat nu uit 6 leden.Sakura Sailors probeert zeker iedere zondag samen te oefenen, maar onze leden oefen ook veel thuis, zo veel mogelijk als hun persoonlijke leven toe laat. We werken allemaal heel hard voor de groep, iedereen heeft wel een eigen soort taakje, maar de anderen staan altijd klaar met een helpende hand indien nodig!De keuze om op andere lied te gaan optreden als onze eigen karakters ging officieel in vanaf ‘jaar 2’, wanneer Sakura Sailors hun tweede anniversary dans cover uploadde op ‘Utsukushiku lkiro' van de groep ‘Takane No Nadeshiko.’ In dit tweede jaar van Sakura Sailors hopen wij nog veel te mogen optreden als onze eigen idol karakters, en een uitgebreidere setlist te hebben met verschillende typen muziek!Zoals in andere J-pop franchises of groepen, bestaat er zoiets als subunits, wat kleine groepjes binnenin de groep zijn, deze dansen dan op liedjes die ze niet met de volledige groep kunnen of willen doen. Sakura Sailors heeft dus ook subunits, deze zijn ‘Lunar Blossoms’ wat bestaat uit Snow, Charlie en Kiki. En ‘KiraKira☆Magic’ wat bestaat uit Vee, Chusy en Rin!We proberen zo veel mogelijk liedjes van andere J-pop en K-pop groepen in onze setlists te stoppen, en proberen ook C-pop dansjes! Met veel dank aan de hosten van het ‘Amazing Asia Festival’ mochten wij dit idee hier debuteren, aan een groter en nieuw publiek! We hopen zeer dat jullie komen kijken, en onze performance leuk vinden, we doen allemaal onze best om jullie een performance te geven die je nooit zult vergeten!
